Machining
Separate intermittent tool changes and clamping from blow-off and continuous uses. Describe the short peaks that an average meter reading can hide.

Confirm with the equipment maker
- Which machine tools, fixtures and auxiliary devices use compressed air?
- Which uses are tool changing, clamping, blow-off or continuous process air?
- What air volume or flow does the maker specify per cycle, with cycle rate and flow basis?
- Which events overlap, how long do peaks last and what sustained demand remains?
- What minimum pressure is required at the most distant machine and at critical clamps?
- What pressure dew point, filtration and oil limits are required by the machine maker?
- What existing receiver volume, pipe dimensions, observed pressure changes and backup are documented?
Common sizing mistakes
- A cycle-average flow is not the instantaneous flow during a tool change or blow-off.
- A local pressure problem is not proof that the whole plant needs a larger compressor.
